Full mouth disinfection or full mouth scaling is a treatment for advanced or aggressive gum (periodontal) disease.
We use longer appointments often close together to attempt to remove and disrupt the bacteria allowing your mouth and gums to return to health. This can be used along with antimicrobials, antibiotics or antiseptics to help your system cleanse.
Conventional treatment can allow time for bacteria to regrow from the tonsils, tongue or other gum pockets. Full mouth disinfection doesn’t allow this to happen.
Treatment is usually done under local anaesthetic, making it much more comfortable for you.
Once your mouth is disinfected it is up to you to maintain it at home. We would see you again a couple of months later to reassess and reclean any areas that did not respond to the treatment.
